Broken Promises

“Something To Think About” B101.5FM Radio Message 8/1/16

One of the hardest things to deal with in life are broken promises from friends, family, or, anyone for that matter. Sometimes promises are broken because of circumstances that could just simply not be helped. The promise was not broken on purpose. For example, a dad promises his daughter that he is going to make her drama performance at school. While on the way, he runs into gridlock on the highway as a result of an accident. There are no exits where he is, and the traffic is at a virtual standstill. By the time he finally gets to the school, the drama is over. Certainly not a promise broken on purpose.

Other times promises are broken by someone who never had any intentions of keeping that promise. Those promises are broken on purpose. No shortage of examples there. Neither of these things EVER happens with God.  There is no circumstance, or worldly, or other worldly power, or problem of any kind, that will ever keep God from keeping His promises.

Many people were wondering if Jesus broke a promise that He had made. He told them that once He was crucified, three days later, He would rise from the dead. Many of His friends. loved ones, even His own disciples were wondering whether or not these were now just mere words dipped in affection, or if in fact, this was just one promise that He could not keep. Certainly every worldly and demonic power was on the scene trying to keep this promise from being kept. But you and I are on the other side of those difficult hours while Jesus’ dead body was covered by a massive stone in that ancient tomb, and we know, thank God, that He did in fact, keep His promise. Jesus rose from the dead, the greatest promise ever spoken and kept in human history.

The angel said to the woman, “Do not be afraid. For I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; He is risen, just as He said. Come and see the place where He lay.” [Matthew 28:5-6]

The power of God’s promises and the fact they will never be broken are first and foremost seen in the fact, that He is the one making the promise. Notice in the above Scripture, “just as He said”. Since He is Truth, it is impossible for him to lie! And, His perfect word and unbroken promises, all flow out of His unfailing love – for us!
