Check Engine Light on Dashboard

‘Something To Think About’ B101.5FM Radio Message – 4/7/16

The automotive industry puts their product through all kinds of tests, checking for every kind of weakness and defect. Mechanical, structural, electrical, etc. They also build ‘warning’ lights into the vehicle to give indication that something is either wrong, or needs basic service, i.e. oil change, tire pressure etc.

When trials enter our lives, sometimes it’s God allowing some testing in order to help us discover something that may not be working right – in us. And if we let Him, He’ll fix it perfectly – every time! Trials and times of difficulty are never something we would want to put ourselves through. In fact, we do everything possible to try and avoid them, or even ignore them. In the example of the car, we’re thankful that there is rigid testing and standards that are applied in order to ensure our safety. After all, our lives, and the lives of our loved ones are at stake.

This is exactly how God sees it in the realm of our human existence. In a very real and daily way, our families and children are ‘riding’ in the front and back seats of our lives. They are affected by our strength and durability, or lack thereof. If God knows there is something in us that is threatening the health and safety of our lives and others, he will allow a time of testing to bring these things to the surface. We may not particularly enjoy the testing, but it is for our own good.

There are also warning or indicator lights on the dashboards of our hearts. This is what we call our conscience, known as the ‘deputy of the soul’. When something requires service, or is going wrong, our inner light goes off giving indication that something is amiss. Many people do not realize that this inner light or prompting is the voice of God’s Holy Spirit. When we ignore it, what started out as a rather small and easily fixable, or serviceable item, ends up being a profoundly and unnecessarily expensive problem.

Only God, who created us, knows the outer and inner workings of our lives and hearts. For our own sakes, He appeals to us through many ‘indicators’, in order to bring us to a place of maximum joy, maximum potential, maximum safety, and maximum performance. When we close our ears to God, we are closing our eyes to the very light on the dashboard of our hearts for all that is good, and right, and necessary for us. Before it’s too late and too costly, Let God change your oil!
