Open door

‘Something To Think About’ B101.5 FM Radio Message – 1/16/16

Helen Keller said: “When one door of happiness closes, another opens – but often we look so long at the closed door, we do not see the one that has opened for us.”

I never did like the sound of a slamming door – it normally means something has gone wrong. Or a teenager!

There are many doors that close on us for one reason or another. For some it may be the end of a relationship. For others it may be an opportunity they were working toward or hoping for, with all of their heart, only to see that particular door of opportunity close. There are even those doors that others have closed on us unfairly. Whether by competitive reasons, jealousies, envy, or even at times, something more sinister, many have had doors ‘closed’ on them because of very unfair and unjust reasons.

Either way, many people have become so trapped in the loss of that opportunity or experience, the closing of that door, they no longer have the joy, desire, or even willingness to try again, and look again, for that next possibility or blessing.

‘The trauma of yesterday’s loss becomes the lead drama of today’s thinking.’ Click To Tweet

There are many reasons for this. Among them are bitterness, resentment, even sadness and depression flowing out of a feeling that something very important and wonderful is either over, or worse, was taken away from them unfairly, and by improper means or methods. This leads to thoughts and emotions that are both governed by, and influenced by – the past. People become so reluctant to try again, or look again, hear again, or even feel again, because the trauma of yesterday’s loss, becomes the lead drama of today’s thinking, being and feeling.

Another reason folks may not seek or desire that fresh open door, is indifference. Just a simple lack of ‘caring’ anymore. There are many great gifts, talents and massively important potentials and contributions to society, home, church, family, etc., that have been swallowed up by the matter of just not caring anymore. Miss Keller had it right – if we stay focused on the closed door – we’ll never see the new doors opening up for us.

And still another reason – is regret. People blame themselves for a door being closed because they didn’t try hard enough, or work hard enough, or sacrifice enough. And the list goes on.

However, there is a power and a promise that is available to all of us, if we will just simply believe it – and believe in the one who gives it.

Jesus said: “See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut.” (Revelation3:8).

Think of it! There is no unfairness, unjust practices or people, envy, jealousy, or anyone, or anything else, that can overwhelm, overshadow, or overrule that promise. He is the one who said: “Let there be light”, and there was light.’ If He can create the heavens and the earth, He can certainly create fresh and new opportunities for us. The world may have closed a door, or many doors, on you. But the Creator of unending universes stands ready to open a new one.

All He asks – is that we believe.

He said: “All things are possible to him who believes.” (Mark 9:23) – and –

“With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26)

  1. I am looking at many open doors in front of me right now… This was a perfectly timed message – I can armor up and yet still be ready for whatever the Lord decides is “right” and good for our family. Thank you!!
