“Something To Think About” B101.5FM Radio Message 7/30/16

There was a young man who sent a love letter to his girlfriend. He romantically assured her that he would climb any mountain, sail across a raging sea, and brave the fiercest storm, just to be with her and near her. At the end of the letter he said, “I’ll be over on Friday- if it doesn’t rain.” Sound familiar?

We need God to strengthen the condition of our hearts Click To Tweet

Many times, this is how we are with each other – and God. Outwardly, we express great words of fearless love and commitment, but at the end of the letter, our true heart is revealed. Jesus said something that is so vital to understand:

“The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” [Matthew 26:41].

He spoke the above scripture to his own disciples who truly loved Him. The situation was, it was the night He was going to be betrayed, and arrested to be eventually crucified. He asked His disciples to pray with Him for one hour. He knew what was about to happen, and wanted to bring it all to His Heavenly Father in prayer. When he came to check on the disciples, they were asleep. Now, these men truly loved Him, the affection and sincerity of their feelings were real, like the love letter above. The problem was, the true condition of their heart was revealed under pressure.

“Truly, God does not see what man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord sees the heart.” [1st Samuel 16:7]

So we see in this that we need God to strengthen the condition of our hearts. In so doing, our affections, feelings, and emotions, will no longer be subjected to the fickleness and inconsistent reality of our flesh (our natural human nature, ability, and thoughts) – but will now be strengthened and governed by God’s Holy Spirit. And the great news is that God makes this possible for all of us. Paul the apostle was teaching a church about their need for this very thing, and that God was the only one that could give it to them.

“That He would grant you according to the riches of His glory to be strengthened with might by His Spirit in the inner man.” [Ephesians 3:16]

A great breakthrough in our human existence and relationships is when, because of the power of God’s Holy Spirit, the affections and feelings and emotions of our lives, finally become steadfast, dependable, genuine, authentic, and effective. As a result, when we tell someone we will brave any storm for them, a little rain won’t hold us back.
