Storm at sea.

‘Something To Think About’ B101.5FM Radio Message – 3/13/16

There is a story of a ship that was nearly driven onto a rocky coast during a storm. The storm was so heavy and fierce that it threatened to sink the ship and its passengers. A passenger snuck up on deck, and saw the pilot steadily holding the wheel, slowly turning the ship back out to sea, avoiding ship wreck. When the pilot saw the man, he smiled.

The passenger went below and said: “All is well, I saw the pilot and He smiled.”

There have been many messages spoken and devotionals written concerning the power of God operating in our lives in the midst of the storm. Sadly, these powerful truths have become so common place, that we begin to take for granted, or just ‘get used’ to the reality of God’s love and saving grace which He makes available to all of us, each and every day of our lives.

When I heard this story, I could not help but think of the shear dread the passengers must have been feeling during the hours of this storm and potential disaster. Their lives were at stake and they ‘knew’ it. There was no time for indifference. A storm was raging, and they were completely aware that their lives were on the line. At the same time, in the midst of it all, there was the pilot, steady at the wheel, steering the ship against the contrary winds, with the lives and safety of his passengers as his main concern and primary objective.

The passenger getting a glimpse of the smile on the pilot’s face is the key to the entire episode. We must take the time to come up a little higher on the ‘ship’ of our lives, in the midst of the constancy of the raging storms in this life, and look to the Captain. We can stay below in fear and anxiety. We can stay below in denial. We can even stay below with indifference and an attitude of surrender. But God is calling us to higher ground, to see Him, and His Perfect love operating every moment of every day, in our behalf, and for our benefit.

“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear..’  [1John 4:18]

This is the headline!! God, who is perfect love, is at the helm of our ship, driving out all the fear that this life attempts to inject into our lives. And there is no storm that will ever overtake or defeat Him. The question is, are you allowing God to be the Captain & pilot of your ship. Without doubt, there are storms looming on the horizon of our lives that are fiercer than any storm that has ever raged before in Human History. Make Jesus Captain now, before these waves rise, and these winds begin to blow. There is no earthly power or effort that will steer you to safety. These storms require Divine power, protection and preservation.

In all that is coming, and even for this day – like the passenger – by looking into the face of Jesus –  our Pilot and Captain in the midst of troubles, seeing His smile – we can be assured that – “All – is well.”
